The self propelled wheelchair has a casing (1) with wheels (2,3) including a front pair at the level of the chassis and a rear pair (3) at the level of a rear part of the chassis. Drives (42) actuate at least one pair of wheels. Front (4) supports are fixed to the front of the chassis in front of the front wheels. Rear supports (5) are fixed to the rear of the chassis behind the rear wheels. The front and rear supports are positioned so that, when they are in contact with the escalator tread surface, the wheels are raised above this surface and not in contact.
