<p>An aromatic copolymer which is composed of a plurality of aromatic copolymer chains each comprising (A) 2,6-diphenylphenol repeating units and (B) comonomer units that are interposed between the 2,6-diphenylphenol repeating units and that are each independently a phenolic comonomer unit selected from among (i) comonomer units derived from phenols monosubstituted with monovalent aromatic groups and halogen atoms, (ii) comonomer units derived from alpha -naphthol, (iii) comonomer units derived from beta -naphthol and (iv) comonomer units derived from phenols each substituted with at least one aliphatic group, and which is characterized in that the contents of (A) and (B) in the copolymer are 50 to 98 % by weight and 2 to 50 % by weight respectively and the content of (iv) is at most 20 % by weight based on (B), and that the weight-average molecular weight is 1,000 to 3,000,000; and a process for the preparation of the copolymer. The copolymer is excellent in electrical characteristics (such as lowness of permittivity), heat resistance, film forming properties, resistance to water absorption, and adhesion to various substrates and therefore extremely useful as the material for electronic components.</p> |
