The method is for making a container with a base (4a) and a sidewall (4b) from a metal blank disc. It involves placing a soft metal disc (2) between further hard (3) and soft (1) metal discs. The intermediate disc has a diameter which is equal to the base of the finished container. The superimposed discs are heated and stamped to form the shape of the container, with the hard external disc forming the outer wall of the container. The contacting surfaces of the three discs can be treated by sandblasting or wire brushing prior to assembly. The intermediate disc can have a thickness approximately double that of the soft inner disc.
