A new process for obtaining hydrophilic polymers in powder form, linear, branched and, possibly, crosslinked, with high powers of dissolution or swelling in aqueous media, consisting of (i) the preparation of a solution of a surfactant of hydrolipophilic balance (HLB) 8 - 12 , in a hydrocarbon solution, and the introduction, with stirring, of an aqueous solution of an unsaturated hydrophilic monomer (or monomer mixture); and (ii) the initiation of phase inversion polymerisation using, in conjunction, a radical initiator at polymerisation temperature. After polymerisation, a second charge of the unsaturated monomer(s) is introduced, and after further polymerisation, the hydrocarbon phase and water are extracted by distillation and drying.
