Synthetic lubricants contain a mixt. of amides of formula (I) and/or (II): (where R is H or 1-20C alkyl; each of R1 and R3 is H, 1-25C primary alkyl or 5-25C sec. alkyl; each of R2 and R4 is 5-25C sec. alkyl; x = 0-12; with the proviso that the mixt. is a mixt. of amides in which the sec. alkyl gps. have one or more of the following carbon chain length ranges, all members of the range(s) in question being present: 5-10C; 10-14C; 14-15C; 16-18C; 17-20C; 19-22C; 22-25C.) The amide mixts. have a high VI (e.g. 43-82 for (I) and 53-128 for (II) when the sec. alkyls are 10-14C) and a low pour point (e.g.-70 degrees F for (I) and -25 degrees F for (II) with 10-14C sec. alkyl).
