Polyamide filament for tyre reinforcement - is treated to improve strength by drawing in vapour atmosphere before final drawing stage

A 500-50,000 denier polyamide filament (e.g. polycaprolactam) having a relative viscosity of 2.5 is drawn at a draw ratio of 2:1-4:1 whilst in the presence of a vapour at high temp. and press. Subsequently the filament is drawn at a draw ratio of 5:1-8:1. The filament is used for reinforcing pneumatic tyres. The tenacity and resistance to flexing of the filament is improved.
