The airbag arrangement comprises a filling device (22) which is installed in the upholstery of the seat. The seat cover (15) is formed by an element which expands like a bag between the vehicle occupant and the vehicle body by action of the gas produced by the filling device in the event of the broadside impact of the vehicle. The seat cover is stretchable and is made of a mesh material. The inner surface of the upholstery bounding the cavity (17) which houses the filling device has a protective lining (18) to prevent gas leakage.
