摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely remove chlorine of a polychlorinated aromatic compound of environmentally pollutive substance in a short time, by subjecting the polychlorinated aromatic compound to a hydrodechlorination reaction and subsequently reacting the left compound with a specific compound. SOLUTION: This method for treating a polychlorinated aromatic compound by a dechlorination reaction comprises bringing the polychlorinated aromatic compound (e.g. polychlorinated biphenyl, polychlorinated dioxin) into contact with hydrogen gas in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst (preferably a palladium catalyst carried on activated carbon) in a solvent (preferably a saturated hydrocarbon) to subject the polychlorinated aromatic compound to a hydrogenation dechlorination reaction, and subsequently reacting the left polychlorinated aromatic compound with an alkali metal tertiary butoxide of the formula (M is an alkali metal)(preferably potassium tertiary butoxide). All the chlorine atoms bound to the polychlorinated aromatic compound are thus removed. The compound of the formula is preferably used in an amount of >=10 times moles that of the polychlorinated aromatic compound. The hydrogenation dechlorination reaction and the reaction of the compound of the formula are preferably carried out are temperatures of 100-300 deg.C.
