Water-cooled internal combustion engine with wet cylinder liner

The internal combustion engine has a directly cooled cylinder bore. The engine is of the wet liner type with a water space (4) between at least part of the length of the liner (2) and the cylinder block (1). Water to cool the cylinder enters the narrow water space through a side bore (5) near the bottom and flows up toward the cylinder head. Most of the cooling water leaves the space round the liner by passing through a main exit channel (6) near the top. The bore in the cylinder block tapers at the top leaving a very narrow water space. The top of the liner has a slightly narrower-diameter portion with fins protruding into a secondary cooling space and the water flows round the fins to a secondary exit (16).
