Metal detectors (14,16,18,20) and distance sensors (22) are provided in a motor vehicle (12). It is possible to signal the departure from the correct path indicated by one or two metal lines (10,10') covered with paint. A display (24) indicates the direction of departure from the correct path and the distance separating the motor vehicle (12) from a preceding one and arranges for alarm signals to be emitted.
