Dust is prevented from accumulating on the inner wall of a furnace (101) by a method involving injecting air into the furnace through a porous refractory material (108a, b) which forms part of the furnace wall (101a, b) or exhaust duct (107). The air flow removes dust from the surface as well as preventing any other dust settling, and also prevents the formation of accretions (flowers) around gas or liq. injection nozzles. The method may be used in conjunction with e.g. fluidised bed incineration furnaces, where the air is injected into the combustion chamber above the bed, or ash melting furances (Fig. 4), where the porous material forms part of the wall of a slag separating chamber (106) and an exhaust gas dust (107).
