The device has a microcomputer (7) to monitor the power supply, to control the current at the converter (6) and also the pole-changing circuit. Evaluated data are stored in a memory which also contains data without any external power supply and files periodically or with the recognition of mains faults. The evaluated data include one parameter that describes the difference in the operating times in the respective direction and a number containing indications of operational disturbances. These indications can also be generated by falsifying the operating times. If the microcomputer recognises switching-on at the terminals, it reads operating data from the memory and forms the basis for lamp operation.
