SENSING WITH ACTIVE ELECTRONIC TAGS

An object (12-1) in a storage area or moving vehicle (12-6) is monitored by attaching an electronic tag (16-1) to the object. An electronic device (15) detects the presence of the object (12-1) by communicating with the tag (16-1) while the object is in storage or is being moved by the vehicle (12-6). The tags (16-1-16-n) may also determine location of an attached object (12-1-12-n) and may reroute the object if it deviates from a given shipping schedule. Each tag has circuitry (102) for communicating information relating to an object in the group to a second tag. Each tag also includes a memory (104) connected to the circuitry (102) that is capable of storing the information, and a controller (106) connected to the memory (104) and the circuitry (102). A sensor (18) is used to detect the condition of an object and communicate the condition to a tag.
