The electric system for the vehicle has a primary circuit (6) comprising the generator (1), a primary battery (4) and a primary component (5) e.g. the starter motor. The secondary circuit (7) is linked to the generator by a control module (8) which includes a variable resistance to control the charging rate of the secondary battery (9) which powers the remainder of the electric components (10) of the vehicle. The controller ensures that the generator is not overloaded and that the primary battery is charged in preference. The control circuit also ensures that a minimum charge level remains in the secondary battery, to ensure that the vehicle can be started.
