This invention relates to the electrolytic processing of liquids and may be used in processing water with silver ions or "water silvering". According to a first variant, this domestic self-contained ioniser includes a water-tight body which comprises the following elements connected together: a power source (15) such as an electrical cell, the ioniser electrical circuits and electrodes. This ioniser is self-contained and fully submersible. The anode is made of silver whereas the cathode is made of any other metal for contact with the food products. The ioniser also comprises a signalling device which indicates its working capacity and/or operation time, and consists of a timer. This device may also indicate depletion of the power source and the reduction of the silver anode mass. The capacity of the autonomous power source is selected according to the expendable mass of the silver anode and is sufficient to ensure complete dissolution of said anode. According to a second variant, the ioniser comprises a protective cap acting as an indicator for displaying its working capacity, moveable between two positions and fitted with a light-emitting indicator at its outer end surface. This indicator is connected to contacts in the inner cavity of the cap. During the mode in which the ioniser's working capacity is indicated, those contacts co-operate with the electrodes of said ioniser. The cap indicator element comprises a key in the form of a protrusion on its outer surface. In its position in which ioniser working capacity is indicated and the electrodes are protected from any damage, the key co-operates with corresponding parallel grooves located longitudinally along the axis of said ioniser. Those grooves are formed on the body of the ioniser in a protective casing that surrounds the electrodes and protects them from mechanical damage.
