An original device (1) alters the valve timing of an internal combustion engine controlled with a gas change-over valve. The device adjusts the relative angular relationship between cam- and crank shafts and comprises a piston (6) moved hydraulically, sealed and confined to move within a casing (10) bordering two chambers (11, 12) which can be subjected to pressure. A control element alternately supplies and removes pressure. The piston fits flush over a section (5) carrying with opposing spiral inner- and outer denticulation meshing with corresponding opposing denticulation (4, 7), fixed against rotation, connected to a drive wheel (3) or cam shaft (2). The device (1) supplies pressure medium from the control element via ducts into an end section of the cam shaft (2) and/or an adapter (13) surrounding the terminal section of the camshaft. The adapter (13) is inserted into a reception bore (17) of a connection section (16) on the side opposite the device (1), connecting one-pi ece with the control element, and partially coaxially-surrounding the adapter (13). The adapter (13) has an axially-spaced ring flange (15) at the end. Inbetween, annular channels (19, 20) are formed. To seal each ring flange (15) an angular groove (26) accepts a ring seal (27). An anti-rotation device holds all sealing rings (27) near a separating joint (27), in the connection section (16). Preferably, in the device, an anti-rotation locking device (28) is made of steel, non-ferrous metal or a glass-reinforced nylon 66.
