A filter located inside a cylindrical filter casing separates a central region (21) linked to an outlet for purified water and a circular outer region linked to an inlet for contaminated water. A pump is used to make the water flow from the inlet to the outlet through the filter. The filter surface is provided on a cylindrical support made to a rotate at a selected speed. The inlet is located at one end of the outer region and the opposite end contains a valve coupled to an outlet. This valve is designed to be opened for short periods of time so that water flows over the filter surface and exits the filter through the outlet in the outer region, in order to remove accumulated particles of eg. dirt from the filter surface.
