The present invention discloses a novel enzyme which is an adipoyl-coenzyme A synthetase. Further the invention relates to a DNA fragment encoding said novel enzyme, an expression cassette, recombinant vector or transformation vehicle comprising said DNA fragment and finally a cell comprising said expression cassette or recombinant vector. In addition, the invention relates to the use of the novel enzyme in processes for producing beta -lactam antibiotics.
