PURPOSE:To efficiently utilize an absorbent in absorption columns and control the changes in the pressure loss of exhaust gas passing through the columns and the mercury concentration in the exhaust gas which passed through the columns. CONSTITUTION:In a method for removing mercury in exhaust gas in which the mercury contained exhaust gas is passed through absorption columns filled with an absorbent which is made by mounting metal sulfide on an inorganic carrier, four or more absorption columns are installed in parallel in the passage of the exhaust gas, and the exhaust gas is passed through all the columns at the same time. The passage of the exhaust gas is stopped only for a column which indicated the largest pressure loss, and the absorbent in the column is replaced before the gas again being passed through the column. This operation is repeated in sequence, or a column is arranged always to stand by so that the rest four or more columns can be operated constantly.
