The motorised vehicle consists of several carriages linked by a releasable coupling with at least two carriages fitted with a motor drive. The carriages are joined by a gangway (7) which can be closed off. The coupling is remotely controlled enabling two carriages (2,3) to be disconnected during the journey. Before releasing the coupling, the gangway can be closed and only after checking that the gangway is unoccupied and closed is the de-coupling operation initiated. A gap measuring system can be connected between carriages which can control at least the speed of the motor drive and/or apply the brakes of one carriage
