A thin film light emitting element having a multilayer structure composed of a lower electrode, an insulating layer, a control electrode, a light emitting layer, and an upper electrode. A display element and a display device both using such a light emitting element are also disclosed. The feature of the thin film light emitting element is that an electron generating section and a light emitting section are separated from each other by introducing the control electrode and, since the generation of hot electrons can be controlled under a voltage of about 10 V, the light emission of the light emitting layer can be controlled under a low voltage.
