PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a chiral smectic liquid crystal element which obviates the occurrence of a flicker on a display screen even if multiplexing driving is executed by providing the surface of the transparent electrodes on one substrate with light shielding layers covering the neighborhood on one side of the outer peripheries of pixels, thereby executing multiplexing driving. SOLUTION: This liquid crystal element has a pair of the substrates facing each other by holding liquid crystals and transparent electrode 12a, 12b groups for driving the liquid crystals disposed to constitute the pixels 21 by intersecting each other on the respective opposite surfaces of a pair of the substrates. The surfaces of the transparent electrodes 12a of the one substrate are provided with the light shielding layers 22 covering the neighborhood on one side of the outer peripheries of the pixels 21. The light shielding layers 22 are formed near the side of the pixels 21 in order to shield the light of the inversion abnormal domains 23 which occur on the side of the pixels 21 having 50 to 90 deg. angle on the forward side with respect to a rubbing direction 24. Namely, the light shielding layers 22 are formed in part of the pixels 21, by which the light of the inversion abnormal domains 23 is shielded without drastically degrading the opening rate of the pixels 21 and the flicker on the display screen is lessened. |
