PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To finish a measurement in a short time by specifying the range of polyacrylamide concentration being employed in electrophoretic separator. SOLUTION: An electrophoretic gel 4 is held on a quartz plate 3 and a sample 32, e.g. a fluorescence-labeled DNA, advances toward the lower end part of gel 4 while being separated electrophoretically starting from the upper end part of gel 4. A laser 1 radiates a part separated by a specified distance from the starting point of electrophoresis and the fluorescence emitted from a DNA passing through that part is condensed by means of a lens 6 with filter 5. It is then amplified 7 and detected by means of a vidicon camera 9 and processed by a computer 10. Since the time (t) required for electrophoresing over an electrophoretic path length L can be represented by a formula t=L/V (N) using the electrophoretic rate V(N) of a piece of DNA having base length N, polyacrylamide concentration C of gel and electrophoretic path length L are selected to shorten the time (t). Preferably, a gel having the concentration C is in the range of 2-6% is employed and the electrophoretic path length L for that concentration C is determined according to the formula. |
