Casting of aluminium@ engine block

The engine block (1) is cast in a sand mould. The cylinder chambers are formed by casting dies fitted in the mould and made of metal which has a thermal expansion coefficient of more than 18 x 10 to the power of minus 6 x K to the power of minus 1. The casting dies are made of a brass material, and the composition may be approximately 60 per cent copper, 2 per cent aluminium, 2 per cent iron, 2 per cent manganese, and the remainder zinc. The dies may have a slightly conical form, or have the form of a hollow cylinder.
