Hydrocracking catalyst comprises a support with a specific surface area of at least 100 m2/g and containing a layer clay mineral composed of silicon and Mg and an amorphous metal oxide at least 1 metal selected from Group VIA metals and at least 1 metal selected from Group VIII metals. Also claimed is a method of hydrocracking heavy hydrocarbon oil, in which heavy hydrocarbon oil and hydrogen are contacted in the presence of the above-claimed catalyst.
