The waste collector has an elongate deflector (8) which floats on the surface of the water and extends obliquely w.r.t. the direction of water flow. The deflector can be a rigid ramp formed of zig-zag sections. Alternatively, there can be a series of ramps (120) which are rectilinear, mutually spaced and positioned in parallel as in the treads of stairs. Each ramp can overlap the adjacent upstream ramp by about half of the length of the latter.
