PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a system and method for integrating an intelligent cruise control function of an electronically controlled internal combustion engine with a conventional cruise control function using an engine control mode defined by the specifications of SAE J1922 and J1939. SOLUTION: In a mode of enforcement 1, a speed control mode is used to transmit a desired engine rotation number for automatically achieving and maintaining a desired succeeding distance to a preceding car. In another mode of enforcement, an engine control rotation number/limit torque control mode is used to set an upper limit to a conventional set cruise control speed for controlling a driving distance to the preceding car. When the preceding car is not detected, the system and method releases control to a conventional cruise control. In another mode of enforcement, a similar control means to that defined to the specifications of J1922 and J1939, and the smaller one is selected of values determined by an intelligent cruise control 72 and a conventional cruise control function 70.
