The continuously variable transmission has a hydrostatic transmission and a mechanical transmission controlled by a processor. Sensors monitor the engine speed and the output speeds of the hydrostatic and mechanical transmissions. The control settings of the accelerator pedal and the gear selector are monitored and the optimum gear ratio is computed using a closed loop control system with incremental control. The control computes a throttle pedal amplification factor which is continuously updated. This factor is compared with a programmed value to calculate maximum allowable errors. The control system uses fuzzy logic for optimum results.
