The invention relates to a shifting (selector) mechanism for a transmission, in particular a motor-vehicle transmission, with a selector shaft (8) which is rotatable and translatable in bearing shells (4, 5) of a housing (1). The selector shaft (8) can be connected to a gear selector lever. To achieve a particularly compact design, it is proposed to attach to the selector shaft (8) at least one first stop means (10), this stop means having a first portion which can be supported against the housing (1) in order to limit a translational movement of the selector shaft brought about by means of the gear selector lever. The first stop means (10) furthermore has a second portion, which can be acted upon by a locking means (25) which holds the selector shaft in the respective rotational position selected.
