Continuous prodn. of polysaccharide esters (esp. starch esters) by partial or complete esterification of the free hydroxyl gps. of polysaccharides, comprises: (a) transesterification of polysaccharides with liquid aliphatic or aromatic, substd. or unsubstd. carboxylic acid esters which dissolve polysaccharides; (b) removal of the liberated alcohol component in an azeotrope with the starting ester; and (c) esterification of the prods. of step (b) with a carboxylic acid or carboxylic anhydride and recycling to the process.
