This invention encompasses compounds of formula (I) wherein: n is 0, 1 or 2, A is X or Ra is hydrogen or nitro; and R1, R2, X, Y and W are variables. These compounds are useful as intermediates for production of certain cycloalkyl and azacycloalkyl pyrrolopyrimidines which are highly selective agonists, antagonists or inverse agonists for GABAa brain receptors or prodrugs thereof and are useful in the diagnosis and treatment of anxiety, sleep, and seizure disorders, overdose with benzodiazepine type drugs, and enhancement of alertness.
