PURPOSE: To attain proper color reproduction even in the case of the portrait image pickup mode and of the writing and picture pickup mode. CONSTITUTION: A correction signal arithmetic circuit 40 extracts a signal of a white object or an object whose color is close to white from color difference signals R-Y, B-Y at each area division being 1/8×8 divisions of one image pattern and calculates R and B correction data so that the mean value is equal to a reference value. A portrait/writing and picture changeover detector 36 detects the portrait pickup mode or the writing and picture pickup mode, a state change detection circuit 3 detects an output change in the detector 36 and informs it to the correction signal arithmetic circuit 40. The correction signal arithmetic circuit 40 uses reference values Rref(1), Bref(1) to converge the image color into warm colors in the case of the portrait pickup mode and uses reference values Rref(2), Bref(2) to converge the image color into white color in the case of the writing and picture pickup mode as reference values for white balance.
