METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR VOLUME REDUCTION OF EXPANDED POLYSTYRENE

PURPOSE: To provide a method of the volume reduction of a waste bulky expanded polystyrene whereby the volume reduction of the molding can be simply and rapidly effected by using a specified-treatment, and a naphtha-like oil can be recovered. CONSTITUTION: Used expanded polystyrene moldings are crushed into blocks, the blocks are cut into smaller pieces, the pieces are introduced into a container for effecting their volume reduction, where they are brought into contact with an alkaline aqueous solution or emulsion containing d-limonene and a surfactant to absorb the d-limonene, and the shrunk pieces with their cells collapsed by the absorbed d-limonene are separated from the alkaline aqueous solution or emulsion. A desirable source of d-limonene is a citrus oil. An anionic or nonionic surfactant is used as the above surfactant.
