PURPOSE: To reduce the short circuit current at fault point upon occurrence of short circuit fault on a power system. CONSTITUTION: A self-excited power converter comprising self-extinguishing elements connected in bridge is provided with an undervoltage detection means 7 for detecting occurrence of short circuit fault on a power system, means 12 for actuating the self-excited power converter quickly upon detection of short circuit fault and absorbing phase lag reactive power from the system, and means 11 for stopping absorption of phase lag reactive power from the system upon removal of short circuit fault.
