A subscriber communication system which includes a base station 104 in a network with a number of subscriber stations 41 where control information is sent between the base station and the subscriber stations over a radio control channel RCC with a frequency which is selected by the base station 104 from a number of predetermined frequencies. The base station 104 transmits control messages, which include a unique network number, over the radio control channel. Each subscriber station 41 processes the network number in the control message received over the radio control channel to enable the subscriber station to process the control message in accordance with whether the subscriber station 41 is located in the same network as the base station 104. The time matching of messages which are sent by a subscriber station 41 over a given connection channel between a base station 104 and the subscriber station is improved after the initial setting up of the connection channel. Both DC signalling information and sound data signals are sent over an allocated channel between a virtual line, which connects a base station to an exchange, and a line interface which connects a subscriber station 41 to a subscriber terminal 115, 116.
