PURPOSE: To attain complete combustion, and to improve the efficiency of combustion, by irradiating a fuel passing through anαray-irradiating device withαrays which are radiated from rod-shaped member for radiating theαrays and which have an ionizing action. CONSTITUTION: A plurality of rod-shaped members 3 for radiatingα-rays, which members are formed by sintering materials which comprise tungsten as the major constituent and of which the rest contains thorium oxide of approximately 2wt.%, are stuck and fastened with an adhesive such as an epoxy resin, being almost parallel to an aluminum sheet. This component is attached to the inside wall surface of an air supply tube 2 in the vicinity of the position which is just before a sparking plug for a hcombustion apparatus 1 using a liquid fuel and at which the fuel and air are mixed, with fastening parts such as bolts and nuts. Alpha rays radiated from a plurality of the rod-shapedα-ray radiating member 3 irradiate the air passing through the air supply tube 2 and ionize oxygen in the air passing therethrough. In this way, the generation of ozone and ionization are promoted, complete combustion may be attained, and the efficiency of combustion is improved.
