A concave recess (2) can be formed in each thrust face of the bearing, together with concentric profiled portions (8), whose apex lines define a paraboloid. Bosses can also be formed on these faces. Pressure-equalising plates can be provided above and below the faces, these being of material whose moduli are appreciably higher than that of the bearing. There can be a circular central opening in the bearing, filled with suitable material. Smaller drillings can be provided at intervals over the bearing surface, these being filled with materials less hard than that of the bearing and whose softness increases towards the centre.
