A polarizer, a manufacturing method thereof, a polarizing plate, an optical film, and an image display device are provided to improve optical characteristics of the polarizer by softening a hydrophilic polymer film during or after an elongation process. A hydrophilic polymer film is dyed with at least two color materials in a dyeing tub. The hydrophilic polymer film is elongated in an elongation tub. During or after the elongation process, a predetermined tension is applied on the hydrophilic polymer film in an elongation direction. A relaxation process is performed by maintaining the tension not to elongate the hydrophilic polymer film for a predetermined time. The elongation relaxation process is preformed during the dyeing process, the elongation process, or at least one other process.
