PURPOSE: To provide a wide-angle zoom lens which is compact and whose image forming performance is excellent. CONSTITUTION: This zoom lens is provided with a first lens group G1 having negative refractive power and a second lens group G2 having positive refractive power in turn from an object side, and constituted so that the respective lens groups are moved to reduce the distance between the first and the second lens groups G1 and G2 when a variable power action is executed to a telephoto end from a wide-angle end. the second lens group G2 is provided with a lens group G2a having positive refractive power, a lens group G2b having positive refractive power and a lens group G2c having negative refractive power in turn from the object side. By moving the lens group G2b along the optical axis, the focusing action of a short-distance object is executed. Then, the conditional expression of -0.5<β2bt<0.6 is satisfied by the image forming magnificationβ2bt of the lens group G2b at the telephoto end.
