A process for producing fumaric acid which comprises isomerizing maleic acid into fumaric acid by using cells of an Escherichia coli transformant carrying a maleate isomerase gene originating in Alcaligenes faecalis, Bacillus stearothermophilus, Bacillus brevis or Seratia marcescens or maleate isomerase harvested from this transformant.
