A side impact air bag module (10) includes a diffuser (26) and a washer (28) which are disposed inside a neck portion (300) of an air bag (12). The diffuser (26) includes an array of mounting tabs (210) which extend through slots (238) in the washer (28), through slots (310) in the neck portion (300) of the air bag (12), and also through slots (110) in a base plate (18). End portions of the mounting tabs (210) are bent over to clamp an inflator (14) and the air bag (12) to the base plate (18). The diffuser (26) directs inflation fluid from the inflator (14) into the air bag (12). The base plate (18) mounts the inflator (14) and the air bag (12) to a vehicle structure (22).
