The engine has a piston (1) whose head includes a pair of through passages (3,4) which cooperate with passages formed in the walls of the cylinder (7). Intake gases are introduced to the lower part of the cylinder from an inlet manifold, compressed by the downstroke of the piston and released into the combustion space above it at the end of the power stroke. Exhaust gases are forced out of the combustion space through an exhaust opening (9) in the cylinder wall. Piston rings (6) are located above and below the entry opening (4) for the intake gases to control sealing of the parts of the cylinder and the passages formed in its walls according to the stroke position of the piston.
