The device has a fuel pump (10) which feeds fuel from a fuel tank (11) via a fuel line and a fuel distributor (13) to injection valves (17a-d) and a pressure regulator (19) which holds the fuel pressure essentially constant. A further fuel line connected between the fuel pump and distributor feeds via the pressure regulator to the fuel tank to return excess fuel.A further line can be connected via a choke and a valve between the fuel distributor and the fuel tank. An evaluation device regulates the fuel supply system depending on measured operating parameters and detects defined operating states, esp. the occurrence of a hot start.
