The device (1) has a handgrip (2) with a holder (3) at its front end for receiving a replaceable point, co-operating with a sensor (4) or switch, supplying a signal to an evaluation device. All the components of the device are resistant to steam and to temps. of up to 134 deg.C. Pref. the device incorporates a microswitch or microsensor provided via a surface-mounted device supported by a printed circuit contained within the hollow interior of the handgrip and used for entering additional information, e.g. the presence of blood or dental plaque.
