PURPOSE: To obtain a friction material for brakes, such as a disk brake pad, excellent in heat resistance as well as high in squeak suppressing effect. CONSTITUTION: A magnetic material having a particle diameter of 1 to 100μm is incorporated in a volume ratio of 1 to 50% into a friction material for brakes that is made of at least one reinforcing fiber selected from an inorganic fiber, an organic fiber, and a metal fiber, a friction adjusting material, and a filler that are bound by a binder resin. Since, without modifying the binder resin or adding a rubber that will cause the lowering in the heat resistance, this friction material damps friction vibrations by the action of the magnetic material, the heat resistance is secured with squeaking suppressed.
