The proposal is for a windscreen wiper device with at least one wiper arm (11) driven by a reversible electric motor (10). There is a timer (19) which gives the time (Tn; Tn+1; Tn+2; Tn+3; Tn+4) after the triggering of a wiping cycle. In addition, there is a timing device (22) which predetermines a maximum permissible time (Tmax; Tmax, n+1; Tmax, n+2; Tmax, n+3) for the duration of half a wiping cycle. A comparator (21) sets any excess of time and triggers a wiping cycle in the opposite direction to the previous one by changing over the electric motor (10) by means of an excess-time signal (27). The windscreen wiper device of the invention makes it possible to maintain limited wiping operation in the event of a blockage (B1, B2, B3) which might, for example, result from packed snow on a windscreen to be wiped.
