A telecommunications network provides between each source (S) and destination (D) first and second alternative routes for signal communication. A network consists of switching nodes (SN) at spaced apart locations and a plurality of communications links (L) extending between the nodes, telecommunication signals from a source (S) are transmitted to a destination (D) through the two routes and the nodes (SN) are pre-configured to provide the first and second routes such that they are physically separated from one another, so that in the event that one route fails, signals can be transmitted along the other. |
