Residual inks are released from printing press rollers or plates, for example, by directing a pulsed laser beam over the outer surface of the roller. The pulse is less than 10 micro-s at 0.303 Joules per cm2. The surface (5) of a printing press ink roller (4) is scanned by the pulsed beam of a Xenon Chloride excimer laser (1) directed through an optical system (2) and mirror (3). The roller is rotated about an axis (6) by a drive system (7) through a variable coupling. The whole assembly is mounted on a base (8) which may be moved in the axial direction, by a control system (9). Released material is extracted by a suction hose (10).
