CONSTITUTION:The liquid crystal molecules near substrates 1a, 1b holding ferroelectric liquid crystals 7 are arranged with a pretilt angle to the substrates. The first virtual straight lines drawn from the side of the liquid crystal molecules near the substrates to the side further from the substrates are the same in the components of the direction parallel with the substrate planes at both substrates when the liquid crystal molecules are viewed from the surface of the substrates. The second virtual straight lines drawn from the position at the substrate boundary with respect to a certain layer of the chevron layer structure of the ferroelectric liquid crystals 7 to the position near the center between both substrate materials are the same in the components of the direction parallel with the substrate planes as the components of the direction parallel with the substrate planes of the first virtual straight line. The walls 5 are formed between both substrates 1a and 1b and the light shielding films 6 are formed to cover the parts of the liquid crystals 7 near the wall surface on the downstream side of the direction facing the first virtual straight lines.
