The mercury is separated form a gas flow, especially from a hot process, by mixing in a co-reagent to form a mercury compound. This reaction product is separated out of the gas stream. Preferably the reagent is a halogen, however, a mixture may also be used, thus in the following, the singular may also import the plural, throughout. The product mercury halide contacts a surface, having a temperature below the vaporisation temperature of the mercury halide, such that halide is deposited onto it. Alternatively, the mercury halide may be cooled below its vaporisation temperature, and separated from the gas stream by electrostatic filtration, mechanical filtration or a wet chemical method. In addition to the process described, suitable appts. is also claimed.
